7 Days in Mauritius: A Local Operator’s Itinerary (North, South & West)
Seven days is the sweet spot for a first trip to Mauritius — long enough to see the contrasting coasts, short enough that you don’t need to rush. This is the itinerary we’d give a friend: a 7-day Mauritius plan from a local operator that balances beaches, the lagoon, the wild south and a couple of genuine adventures, with the practical bits (transfers, getting around) sorted.
Before you go: getting around
Start your trip the easy way with a pre-booked airport transfer at a flat rate — no haggling at arrivals after a long flight. For the week itself, a hire car gives you the most freedom on a small island; if you’d rather not drive, we can arrange transfers for each day out.
Day 1 — Arrive & settle into the south-east
Land, transfer to your base, and take it slow. The south-east around Blue Bay and Mahébourg is a relaxed first night — a swim, a walk along the waterfront and an early dinner.
Day 2 — South-east lagoon & Île aux Cerfs
Get on the water with a South-East catamaran cruise to the Trou Moutou reef and the white sand of Île aux Cerfs — snorkelling, a beach stop and lunch on board.
Day 3 — The wild south: Le Morne & Chamarel
Head west to the UNESCO-listed Le Morne peninsula and the Chamarel region — waterfalls, the Seven Coloured Earths, and viewpoints over the south coast. Active travellers can swap in a guided hike or even canyoning at the Tamarind Falls.
Day 4 — South-west lagoon, Crystal Rock & dolphins
The west coast is the island’s best for dolphins. Start early to watch wild spinner pods, then sail the South-West catamaran cruise to Crystal Rock and Île aux Bénitiers.
Day 5 — North: Grand Baie & the northern islands
Move north to lively Grand Baie. Spend the day on a Northern Discovery speedboat trip to the northern islets, or do something completely different and descend beneath the lagoon on the Blue Safari submarine.
Day 6 — Your choice: reef, paddle or rod
Build the day around what you love: gentle sea kayaking, snorkelling the northern reefs, or a big-game fishing charter off the drop-off.
Day 7 — Slow morning & departure
One last swim, pick up any souvenirs, and take a pre-booked transfer back to the airport in good time.
Practical tips
- When to go: May–November is cooler and drier; December–April is warmer with the best water temperature for swimming.
- With kids: catamaran cruises and the submarine are the easy wins; keep boat days to mornings.
- Budget: mix bookable sharing cruises (per person) with one private charter as a treat.
Frequently asked questions
Is 7 days enough for Mauritius? Yes — it’s a compact island. A week lets you cover the south-east, south-west and north without backtracking.
Do I need a car? It helps, but it’s not essential — every experience above can be reached by arranged transfer if you’d rather not drive.
