Canyoning at Tamarind Falls (7 Cascades), Mauritius: Guide, Difficulty & Price
For travellers who’d rather earn their views, canyoning at the Tamarind Falls — the famous 7 Cascades — is the best adventure on the island. You abseil down waterfalls, glide a natural zipline across the gorge, and (if you’re brave) leap into a pool, all in one of Mauritius’ most spectacular hidden valleys. No experience needed — just a head for adventure and the ability to swim.
Where is it?
The 7 Cascades sit above Henrietta, inland from Tamarin on the west side of the island — a lush, forested gorge of waterfalls and natural pools. It feels a world away from the beach resorts, yet it’s an easy drive from the west and central coasts.
What the experience involves
- Three rappels (abseils) of 10–25 m down the waterfalls, all on a double-safety system.
- A natural zipline across the gorge.
- An optional cliff jump into a pool — entirely your call.
- Two certified guides (FFME & wilderness first-aid trained) with you throughout, plus a practical training session before the first descent.
It’s roughly a 3-hour, 3 km route with 125 m of descent, graded easy-to-moderate — and every technical section has an alternative walking path, so you can opt out of anything you’re not feeling.
Who can do it?
Canyoning suits reasonably fit travellers aged 14 to 65. You must be able to swim, and there’s a weight range of 20–100 kg. It’s not suitable for pregnant women or anyone with serious medical or mobility issues. Full technical gear — helmet, harness, wetsuit and descent system — is provided.
When it runs & what it costs
The experience runs on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, meeting at 8:30am at Henrietta, and is priced at Rs 4,000 per person. Bring swimwear, a change of clothes, sports shoes, water and a snack.

Combine it with a hike
The same region is superb for walking — pair your canyoning day with a guided hike in the Black River Gorges or up Le Morne for a proper adventure week.
