Big-Game Fishing in Mauritius: Seasons, Species & Charter Prices

Big Game Fishing — Private Charter

Mauritius is one of the great big-game fishing destinations on the planet, and the reason is geography: the seabed plunges to hundreds of metres just a few minutes from shore, so you reach proper blue water — and the fish that live in it — almost as soon as you leave the harbour. Whether you’re a seasoned angler or a first-timer, here’s what to expect, when to come, and how to charter a boat.

Why the fishing here is so good

Off the west coast around Rivière Noire (Black River) — the island’s fishing capital — the continental shelf drops away steeply close to land. That deep water near shore concentrates baitfish and the big predators that hunt them, which is why Mauritius holds several line-class world records.

What you can catch

  • Blue & black marlin — the headline fish, and the reason many anglers come.
  • Yellowfin tuna, wahoo, dorado (mahi-mahi) — hard-fighting and superb on the line.
  • Skipjack, bonito and sharks — common and a lot of fun on lighter tackle.

When to go: the fishing seasons

You can fish year-round, but the seasons matter for what’s running:

  • Marlin — peak roughly October/November to March/April (the Mauritian summer).
  • Yellowfin tuna & wahoo — strong through the cooler months and into spring.
  • Dorado — best in the warmer, wetter months.

Most skippers practise tag-and-release on billfish to keep the fishery healthy, while edible species can come home for dinner.

Which charter is right for you?

  • Light-tackle & jigging — a shorter, action-packed trip that’s perfect for beginners and families. From Rs 14,615 per group.
  • Big-game private charter — the classic offshore day chasing marlin and tuna on heavy gear. From Rs 25,500 per group.
  • Multi-day offshore expedition — serious anglers head out to the distant banks for the biggest fish. From Rs 106,000.

All charters are private to your group and include the boat, skipper, crew, tackle and bait — you just bring a hat, sunscreen and a sense of adventure.

FAQ

Do I need experience? No. The crew rig the lines and coach you through the fight — light-tackle trips in particular are great for first-timers and kids.

Do I keep the fish? Marlin and other billfish are usually tagged and released; edible catch like tuna, wahoo and dorado can be kept.

What about seasickness? Offshore water can be lumpy — if you’re sensitive, take a tablet the night before and the morning of the trip.

Ready to hook into something big? Charter a big-game fishing boat or talk to a local about the right trip and season.
